Fatal error solution: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded

There was an error message popping up while trying to update WordPress to the latest version:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /home/asf/public_html/wp-includes/http.php on line 1211

This is a problem my friend experienced in his new VPS, because he uses Webuzo and is a layman of server setting problems so it’s a bit of a jerk to happen in his attempt to fix this error.

This is a problem with PHP trying to execute code that takes longer than the preset limit, and usually the default setting in 30 seconds. If it exceeds clear the process will stop and fail.

Now the solution can be by increasing the time to run the PHP script, please open the php.ini file (if in Webuzo can pass the panel, no need to pass SSH) and change or add the following code:

max_execution_time = 120

This will instruct the PHP service so that a process can run up to 120 seconds. Could be much longer, but not too high value because it can burden the server work because the execution is not completed – completed.

So other processes have to wait in line and wait for it to finish. Oh yes, the location of php.ini on Linux servers (CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu, etc.) can generally be:

/etc/php.ini
/etc/php5/apache2/php.ini
/etc/php5/cli/php.ini
/usr/local/lib/php.ini

And for example you are looking for ways to solve similar problems but in shared hosting like cPanel it can be by creating a php.ini file and put in your hosting that contains the same code. The alternative is to fill it in the .htaccess file but the code is a bit different:

php_value max_execution_time 120

Of course this is a general solution, sometimes even when the execution deadline is fixed still error. As in Drupal I’ve had a lot of trouble because the AdvAgg (Advanced CSS / JS Aggregation) module turns out there’s another parameter that should be enabled: allow_url_fopen also via php.ini.
